GENERAL INFORMATION FOR ARTISTS
Please read carefully as there are changes from previous years.
Painting Dates and Times for 2023
Friday, July 7: 10 am to 5:00 pm
Saturday, July 8: 10 am to 5:00 pm
Sunday, July 9: 10 am to 4:00 pm
Registration Dates: Registration opens at 9 am April 17. Registrations/payments submitted prior to this will not be accepted. Artists will be selected on a first come – first served basis. A waiting list will be created to manage cancellations, and registrations will be acknowledged by email, mail or telephone. Registration closes on June 1.
Registration Fee: $35 for PCAFA members, $40 for non-members
This fee includes: 1-3 days of plein air painting and for all artists the opportunity to display and sell a single (1) previously created work (Studio Art – see below), light snacks and water, volunteer assistance, promotion of the event
Artist Bio Statement: Each year we create an “Artist Bio Book” with information from each participant. Often visitors and interested art purchasers like to photograph this information. Artists should supply a stand-alone, single page Bio or Artist Statement as soon as their registration is confirmed, and no later than June 1. This should be emailed to [email protected]. Please do not just write your bio in the body of the email.
Number of Participants: up to a maximum of 40 artists.
Minimum Age for Participation: 18 years old.
Insurance: The Paint Peggy’s Cove committee will handle all artwork as carefully as possible but is not responsible for any damaged or stolen paintings. A Mongolian Yurt will be erected in Peggy’s Cove to display and sell all the art. The doors to the Yurt will be locked each night and care is taken to ensure that there is always a volunteer present in the Yurt. Artists are responsible for their own insurance.
Event Location: The Paint Peggy’s Cove Yurt will be located in the yard of the DeGarthe House at 109 Peggy’s Point Road, directly across from the Visitor Information Centre Parking Lot. There will also be a children’s art tent situated nearby.
COVID Restrictions: All Province of Nova Scotia restrictions must be followed during the event.
On Site Artist Registration: All artists must check-in at the Yurt between 8:30 and 10:30 on their first day of painting. Each artist will receive a registration package with a name tag, a map of the Cove, tags for labelling plain air artworks, and will be asked to sign an Artist Agreement. The map will indicate the boundaries where the Volunteers will be available to assist. This is also when previously completed (Studio Art) artworks must be dropped off.
Studio Art: All artwork must be ready-to-hang with properly attached wires on the back. NOTE: ‘saw-tooth’ hooks will not work with our hanging system. No work can be wider than 14” or higher than 20” (frame-included). Larger works will not be accepted. We will have pre-made labels for your artwork and volunteers to hang the work. When you arrive, a volunteer will ensure that the information on the label corresponds to the work you have brought. You will need to remove any packing material you have brought as there is no storage space in the Yurt. Sold works will be wrapped independently. If your artwork sells, you will be allowed to hang a replacement. It is advisable to put your name and the title of the work on the back of your artwork.
Daily Check-In During the Event: All artists are required to check-in each morning at the Yurt. You can start painting as early as you like, and there will be a volunteer in the Yurt by 8:30 every morning. Often visitors or artists come looking for other artists so it helps to know if you have arrived. If you leave early, it is helpful for us to know for the same reason.
Parking: Parking can be very congested, come early and park in the Visitor’s parking lot. Do not park on private property.
Weather: Please come prepared for all types of weather conditions (hot cold, windy, damp). Paint Peggy’s Cove will be held rain or shine. In the event of a hurricane or named tropical storm, we will need to cancel and will contact you as soon as a decision to do so is made.
Washrooms: In Peggy’s Cove, washrooms are located at the Visitor Information Centre, at the Sou’Wester Restaurant near the lighthouse and near the Yurt.
Painting On-Site: All painting and drawing must be done on site. This is an opportunity for the public to see artists at work and to buy work they have seen them create. Artists are encouraged to produce at least 1 piece per day. It is important to bring your cell phone if you have one. Frequently visitors who have seen an artist at work or wish to buy their artwork like to meet the artist and we need to be able to reach you. When you complete a painting, you can call the Yurt and a volunteer will be sent to you to pick it up. Or you can flag down a nearby volunteer. You will need to complete a label for each painting with the following information: Artist name, Title, Medium, Price. All sales must be handled by PCAFA Paint Peggy’s Cove designated volunteers in the Yurt. We ask that artists not use the washroom sinks for cleaning brushes or dumping paint fluids as these are composting facilities.
Painting Locations: We will provide you a simple map to help orient you to the village. There are many areas of private property that should not be travelled on, and we ask that you respect all signage posted in the village.
IMPORTANT: Do not approach the edge of the water or the dark areas of rock. Waves, swell and surge are unpredictable even if the sea appears calm, and these dark areas are slippery and very dangerous. It is virtually impossible to get out of the water due to the seaweed and heavy surge.
Sales Policy:All art sold during the entire event will be subject to the following: The artist receives 70% of the selling price; 30% will go to the Peggy’s Cove Area Festival of the Arts to cover costs of running the event. A cheque for your sales will be mailed to you within 3 weeks of the event.
What to Bring: You should bring anything you need to paint – easel, chair, small table, sun hat, umbrella etc. You should bring weather protection in case of inclement weather as there is very limited shelter space. We will have some supplies of drinking water and granola bars for artists. There are a few places to buy food in the Village but there is not a large selection so bringing your lunch is suggested.
Artist Check-Out: All plein air pieces completed on Sunday must be turned in by 2:30 pm. The Yurt will be open to the public 10 – 5 (Friday and Saturday) and 10 – 4 on Sunday. You must check out at the end of the last day you are painting. Unsold art will be picked up at that time. You must check at the sales desk so that the inventory list can be reviewed and sales confirmed.
We hope you have a great time at Paint Peggy’s Cove, and look forward to meeting you and seeing your artistic interpretations of Peggy’s Cove and environs.
